ContextThe hurricane that tore across Miami and Miami Beach late Friday night has crossed the peninsula and passed Mobile, weakening as it turns west over southern Alabama and Mississippi. First totals put the known dead at 375 and the injured near 4,000, with a pilot flying over the Everglades reporting the settlements along the streams leveled.

ContextAimee Semple McPherson, the Los Angeles radio evangelist who vanished from a beach in May and reappeared in Mexico in June saying she had been kidnapped, is charged with four others in a conspiracy complaint. Prosecutors say she spent part of that time in a Carmel bungalow with Kenneth Ormiston, her former Angelus Temple radio operator, who has dropped from sight; his lawyer now speaks for him from Chicago.
ContextHarry M. Daugherty, attorney general under President Harding, and Thomas W. Miller, the former alien property custodian, are on trial in New York over the release of some $7,000,000 in American Metal Company assets that the government had impounded during the war. The lawyer John Foster Dulles, who tried the claim first and failed, is on the stand; the defense is trying to show he asked Washington the wrong questions.
ContextJack Dempsey, heavyweight champion since 1919, defends his title against Gene Tunney in Philadelphia on Thursday night. The money is heavily on the champion, and one bettor has put up $1,500 against $6,000 that Tunney will not answer the bell for the third round.
The Daugherty–Miller trial goes on in New York and the Los Angeles court still waits on Mrs. McPherson's physician, with Dempsey and Tunney now two nights from the bell.
