ContextThe World Series is the best-of-seven championship between the winners of the American and National League pennants; Rogers Hornsby plays second base for the Cardinals as well as managing them, Babe Ruth is the Yankees' outfielder, and Grover Cleveland Alexander, a pitcher in the major leagues since 1911, came to St. Louis from the Chicago Cubs during this season. A spitball is a pitch moistened by the pitcher, outlawed in 1920 except for a few named men allowed to keep throwing it.
