ContextAiken is a town in western South Carolina. A lynching is a killing by a mob acting outside the law; a directed verdict of not guilty is an order by the trial judge acquitting a defendant before the jury is allowed to decide, on the ground that the evidence is insufficient.
ContextWuchang is a walled city on the south bank of the Yangtse River, across from Hankow in central China. Since the summer the Cantonese armies of the Nationalist movement in the south have been marching north against the war lords who hold the rest of the country, among them Wu Pei-fu, Chang Tso-lin and Sun Chuan-fang, overlord of the eastern provinces.
