ContextThe Lehigh Valley and the Central Railroad of New Jersey were competing eastern lines whose tracks crossed at grade in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, about fifty miles north of Philadelphia. Steel passenger coaches were then replacing wooden ones on American railroads.
