ContextBettis won the 1925 Pulitzer air race at 248.99 miles an hour and was one of the Army's best-known pilots, assigned to exhibition flying at Philadelphia's Sesquicentennial Exposition. He flew into a Pennsylvania mountain in fog last week and was brought to Walter Reed hospital by ambulance plane with a broken leg and both jaws fractured.
